Bands are rough guides for a small account, not a standard. See the questions below.
How it is worked out
Engagement rate = (likes + comments + shares + saves) ÷ followers × 100. It tells you what share of the people who follow you did something with a post, which is a fairer measure than the raw like count: 50 likes is a quiet day for an account with 50,000 followers and a very good one for an account with 500.
Work it out for a few recent posts rather than one, then look at which posts sit above your own average. That comparison, against yourself, is more useful than any industry figure.
The longer version, with what to do about a low number, is in how to calculate engagement rate. To see how your posts compare with a competitor's, there is a half-hour method in how to do a social media competitor check in 30 minutes.
Questions people ask
- How is engagement rate calculated?
- Add up the likes, comments, shares and saves on a post, divide by the number of followers the account had when it went out, and multiply by 100. Fifty interactions on a post from an account with 1,000 followers is an engagement rate of 5%.
- What is a good engagement rate for a small business?
- Published averages vary by platform and by who is measuring, so treat any benchmark as a rough guide. For a small account, under 1% is low, 1 to 3% is about average, 3 to 6% is good and above 6% is excellent. Smaller accounts usually score higher than large ones because more of their followers are real customers.
- Should I divide by followers or by reach?
- Both are used. Dividing by followers measures how much of your existing audience reacted; dividing by reach measures how well the post did with everyone who saw it, including non-followers. This calculator uses followers because that figure is on every profile and is easy to compare over time. If you use reach, say so when you compare numbers with anyone else.
- Where do I find the numbers to type in?
- Followers is on your profile. Likes and comments are under every post on every platform. Shares and saves are shown on business and creator accounts in the post's insights; if your account does not show them, leave those boxes empty.
- Does this calculator store my numbers?
- No. The sum happens in your browser and nothing is sent to WyreIt or anyone else. There is no sign-up.
